Real Madrid clinch Champions League semi-final spot with penalty shootout victory over Manchester City
Real Madrid have booked their place in the Champions League semi-finals after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Manchester City in the quarter-final tie. The match at the Etihad Stadium ended in a 1-1 draw after regular and extra time, meaning the tie had to be decided from the spot.
The Whites initially got off to a poor start in the shootout. Luka Modric missed his penalty, while Manchester City took the lead through Julian Alvarez. However, Real Madrid once again showed their Champions League experience and kept their nerve. They converted their next three penalties, before Thibaut Courtois saved the decisive penalty from Riyad Mahrez to seal their place in the semi-finals.
A real challenge now awaits the Madridistas in the next round: FC Bayern Munich. Coach Carlo Ancelotti must prepare his team for another tough duel with the German record champions.
The two teams already met in the group stage of this season’s competition. Real Madrid won one match and drew the other.
