The photo, taken by Portland birth photographer Laura Paulescu, captures a mom spending a precious moment with her youngest child just before delivering her third baby. The next time this mom and her daughter see each other, another child will have joined the family, and this little girl will no longer be the “baby” of the group. It’s clear from the look on the mom’s face that she knows that this fleeting moment, before their family dynamic forever changes, is a special one.

“Pure sweetness,” Paulescu wrote in the photo’s caption on Facebook. “Last hugs before saying goodbye to momma and the last time she would sit on that big round belly with her sister still inside.” The picture was taken last winter, but it’s continued to inspire viewers all these months later, with Facebook commenters chiming in to share their own stories of hugging their older kids goodbye before giving birth to a new baby.

“As a mother of two myself, I actually think you understand even more so how quickly life changes with that ‘baby’ when you bring another into your family, after you have two,” Paulescu shared with Scary Mommy. “So this momma [in the photo] knew even deeper in her heart how much things would be changing and how much she wanted to hold onto that moment just a little longer, because she had experienced this once before. Holding your ‘little’ one so close one last time, before they aren’t the little one anymore.”

It seems that lots of other parents can relate, as the post has now been shared over 1,000 times. “The moment of that last hug goodbye was just so special,” Paulescu told Scary Mommy. “I’m so honored to have frozen that moment in time for them to treasure forever.” What a beautiful memory for this mom and her family.
