A little dog with a sad face can’t believe she can walk again. She had a new chance thanks to a prosthesis that was implanted and saved her life. This is the story of Monika, a sweet and tender Russian canine who lived on the streets of Novosibirsk, Siberia.
The little dog seemed incredulous that she could ever walk again.

Monika, like any dog or puppy who has been subjected to the indignity of the infamous alleys, has a very dark and painful past. Her story goes back a long way.

One fine day in December of last year 2020, Monika was rescued. When she was found, she was on the verge of death, lying in a cold forest in the town of Krasnodar, in southwestern Russia.

According to her rescuers, all four of her paws had severe amputation wounds and she looked exhausted. However, even so, her courage allowed her to walk with difficulty. How she got to that situation is still a complete enigma.

“No one knows what happened to her, some fellow volunteers think that someone cut off her legs for fun. This is a really painful thing to see,” said Sergey Gorshkov, a specialist who was in charge of assessing Monika.

After intensive efforts to stabilize her, the dog underwent surgery to restore her hope and will to live. She was fitted with titanium prostheses.

In truth, the operation was one of a kind, very rare and very expensive. However, when there is good faith and solidarity from people, nothing is impossible and the surgery could be financed online.

The beige fur dog is a new animal with her titanium prostheses, thanks to Gorshkov’s good offices and expertise. Aided by an excellent team at the Best clinic, his efforts well paid off.

“Luck and experience played a big role,” Sergey Gorshkov, the 33-year-old veterinarian behind this feat at the Best clinic, modestly told AFP.

Thanks to this miraculous prosthesis, and despite the fact that she still shows a lot of fear when walking, she has gradually adapted. Every day Monika moves more easily.

Although this is not the first time this operation has been performed, having been applied on a cat in 2019, it is an unprecedented one for a little dog. Had she not been found and treated, Monika would not be with us today.

It is the story of a survivor whose age is estimated to be between two and four years, and who could have ended her days like so many wounded wandering dogs. Slowly and painfully put down or dead.

Prior to her operation, the little dog was lucky enough to meet Alla Leonkina, a woman who sympathized with her condition. Together with a friend, she took care of Monika for almost a year. The little animal was in a deplorable state.
She is a real warrior!
Together they decided to create the initiative to ask for donations for the cause of Monika’s operation. In just a matter of 30 days, they managed to raise 400,000 rubles, equivalent to 5,500 US dollars.

Not an insignificant amount in Russia, by the way. In addition, these kind-hearted people bought the expensive prostheses. They are made in 3D with state-of-the-art technology.
Finally she will be able to enjoy life
After the surgical procedure, one of the legs broke after being fitted, which was no problem for the doctors. Six months later it was repaired and successfully installed. She has been walking on four prostheses ever since.

Today Monika enjoys good health and the fine oblivion of its murky past history, thanks to the commitment and love for the profession of these people. All of them, always committed to give their best in order to save innocent lives.
