Doctors described Jaden Wesley Morrow’s birth on July 11 — he was 17 weeks early and weighed just 13 ounces — at Blank Children’s Hosptial in Des Moines as “remarkable” and “amazing.”
Just 23 weeks into her pregnancy, Ellonn Smartt went into labor and was told her baby most likely wouldn’t survive. She underwent an emergency cesarean section and her son was born more than six pounds under the average weight of newborn babies.

The good news: This miraculous, minuscule child is in stable condition.
“[The doctors] are kind of going day by day. They’re pretty much saying he looks really great,” Smartt told ABC News. “Like I said, they’re going day by day but so far he’s looking great.”
As of July 28, Jaden had grown to 1.1 pounds in weight, has been tolerating breast milk and no longer needs insulin injections.
Smartt has set up a GoFundMe for birth-related expenses that has nearly doubled its $2,500 goal. A Caring Bridge profile has been set up for Jaden to provide updates on his progress.
