Did you know that most animals cannot recognize their own reflections in mirrors? It is an interesting fact that highlights the importance of self-awareness. However, elephants are one of the few animals that can recognize themselves in mirrors.
They exhibit this self-awareness by inspecting parts of their bodies they have never seen before, such as their mouth. Other animals like lions, dolphins, cheetahs, and gorillas show innate curiosity when presented with mirrors, even though they cannot understand that the reflection is themselves.
Some animals, like dogs and squirrels, lack self-awareness, making them uninterested in mirrors. On the other hand, some animals, like roosters, can see their reflections as competition, making them attack their own image. Intelligence tests on animals have revealed that pigs, magpies, and manta rays can recognize themselves in mirrors.
However, some animals, like snakes, have a different vision and, therefore, find mirror tests more confusing. Horses, on the other hand, are unable to see short distances directly in front of them due to their eye position.
