In spring, from September to November, the cities of Sydney, Grafton or Brisbane are filled with purple Jacaranda flowers.

Located in the southern hemisphere, Australia’s spring lasts from September to November. At this time, flowers begin to bloom all over the country, including Jacaranda, also known as purple phoenix. Photo: Au Tree Lopping.

Native to South America, purple phoenix is believed to have appeared in Australia in the 1850s. At that time, this flower was experimentally grown in Sydney’s royal botanical garden but did not live long. In 1868, the owner of the nursery at Double Bay, Mr. Michael Guilfoyle found a method of cuttings to grow this tree. Towards the end of the 19th century, purple phoenix became popular in Queensland and New South Wales. Photo: Nathan Edwards.

One of the most attractive purple phoenix viewing spots is Sydney. In October and November, this flower blooms and when it falls, it forms a rain of purple flowers at roadsides, parks and universities. Photo: Time Out.

An iconic purple phoenix tree of the city is located on the campus of the University of Sydney. There is an oral story here that if students do not study before the flowers bloom, they will fail the exam. On the contrary, you will be lucky if you catch a falling flower with your right hand.

In 2016, the 88-year-old purple phoenix tree at the school fell due to pests. To date, a copy of the tree has been replanted with cuttings from the old tree. Photo:  University of Sydney.

Grafton is considered the purple phoenix capital of Australia. In October-November, more than 4,000 trees bloom, covering a vast expanse of the Clarence River valley. Photo: My Clarence Valley.

Every year, there is also a purple phoenix festival lasting about 10 days with activities such as street parades, music nights, hot air balloons… This year’s festival starts from October 25 to the end of the year. 3/11. Photo: Jacaranda Festival.

Jacaranda is a genus of 49 species of flowering plants in the family Bignoniaceae. This flower is usually purple-blue in color, but also has a white form. In addition to Australia, purple phoenix is also grown in many places such as South Africa, Brazil, New Zealand, Nepal and even Da Lat, Vietnam. Photo: Needpix .
