Native to South America, purple phoenix is believed to have appeared in Australia in the 1850s. At that time, this flower was experimentally grown in Sydney’s royal botanical garden but did not live long. In 1868, the owner of the nursery at Double Bay, Mr. Michael Guilfoyle found a method of cuttings to grow this tree.
