A dog can be a better mother than any human when it comes to offering love and protection, if it depends on saving the life of a vulnerable creature that did not even come out of her womb.

We often hear that sometimes animals in distress are lucky enough to meet compassionate humans who don’t hesitate to lend them a helping hand.

Sadly, though, this is not always the case, and many other times, we humans are the ones who pass them by without doing anything to save them.

But ironically, on the contrary, it has happened that when animals see a human in distress, without thinking twice, they come like a spring, risking everything, as in the case of this homeless dog who saved a baby from dying in the cold.

This story is a demonstration of the immense solidarity of dogs and what their hearts are made of.

It all started when a mother abandoned her baby in the backyard of a house located in Lord Byron at kilometer 45 of national route 3, in Virrey del Pino, Buenos Aires.

The dog named Puti had just given birth to her offspring, and when she found the baby abandoned, helpless, and thrown to his fate, her mother’s heart did not allow her to remain indifferent.

So she took him with her to a small seat that she used to keep her cubs sheltered. She took him in as if he were one of her puppies, because she knew he needed her, he was totally helpless.

The puppy did not hesitate to take the baby in as if it were one of the litter.

Puti kept the baby, named Santino, snuggled under her like another puppy until the baby’s cries alerted the neighbors.

Doctors say that had it not been for the puppy, the baby would not have been able to withstand the cold temperatures.

Puti had more maternal instinct for the baby than Santino’s own mother.

The neighbors fed Santino and then took him to the Hospital Materno Infantil Doctor José Equiz. He was hospitalized for several days receiving medical attention, he was only one month old and suffered from severe malnutrition.

The authorities managed to find the mother only two days later and she was arrested. For the time being, Santino and his siblings are in a foster home.

The neighbors who found Santino knew the mother, as she had lived in the area in the past and said that she had already tried to abandon one of her children on another occasion.

Puti’s maternal instinct was even stronger and saved the baby’s life.

“It was the coldest night, being cuddled under the little dog saved the baby. All that was missing was for her to breastfeed him, she took him in like another pup,” said the neighbor who heard the baby cry.

This story never ceases to move everyone. No matter how desperate or troubled a mother may be, she should not abandon a newborn baby to its fate.

There are a thousand ways to ask for help before throwing the baby out of her womb as if it were something disposable.

On the other hand, it shows us how noble animals can be, they have a huge heart compared to many humans who only know how to hurt. Had it not been for this madrassa, the poor baby would not still be alive.

Thanks to her, the baby’s fate was changed forever and he had a chance to get the help he needed.

Dogs have a heart full of love to offer all around them, nothing compares to their sensitivity to the suffering of another being and their ability to give protection.
